Australia's Perth Mint has unveiled a new collection featuring pure gold coins.

The Aboriginal Dreamtime currency has been produced to showcase the country's wildlife, Aboriginal culture and landscape, WA Today reports.

Designed by in-house artist Darryl Bellotti, the 45-coin 'Dreaming Series', which includes currency struck from 99.99 per cent pure gold, will launch between 2009 and 2011.

Chief executive officer of Perth Mint Ed Harbuz said the coins are likely to be of interest to collectors across the world as Aboriginal art "continues to be extremely popular".

"Darryl's remarkable work can only extend the reach of its appeal by exposing it directly to large numbers of coin collectors worldwide," he told the news source.

Earlier this month Perth Mint announced that sales of a limited range of gold bullion coins have been resumed, after it was forced to close its order book late last year due to high demand in the current economic downturn.
