India Post has sold almost 10kg of gold coins since it made them available to buyers three months ago, it has emerged.

The company has been selling 0.5g, 1g, 5g and 8g Swiss-made gold coins at its post offices across the country since October of last year, Commodity Online reports.

And P N Mishra of the India Post told the news source that the currency has been popular, stating: "So far, the sale of gold coins has been impressive. We are adding more post offices to step up the gold coins sale project."

He noted that sales have been especially strong in several states, adding that the scheme is to be extended to rural areas in the future.

The announcement follows a similar statement from the Department of Posts, which revealed earlier this week that it has sold 7kg of gold coins since it introduced a scheme in December 2008.
