Thursday, 29th January 2009 (767 views) South Africa is to hold the third annual International Conference in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, it has been announced.The event is due to begin in Pretoria on Monday and will showcase research and development that has been taking place in the nanotechnology field, BuaNews reports. Scientists from 14 countries will be attending the event to discuss the technology, which often involves the use of gold. Communication assistant director for the country's Department of Science and Technology Zama Mthethwa explained that the event will benefit students operating in the area. "It will deal with the issues that affect students working in nanoscience and technology research in the country, particularly financing, resources, networking and awareness issues," she was quoted as saying. Gold has recently been used in the development of a new mechanical switch produced using nanotechnology. The breakthrough has been made by Marius Trouwborst, who rearranged gold atoms in order for them to be used as a tiny break junction switch.
