Sales of the new 2009 Ultra High Relief Saint Gaudens $20 (£14) gold piece that recently became available on the US Mint's website have been strong, it has been claimed.

According to Numismaster, the volume of collectors attempting to purchase the coin caused the mint's website to slow on the release day of January 22nd, with 40,727 of the coins being sold between then and January 26th.

Orders are currently limited to one per household for the currency, which is a replica of an unreleased coin that was commissioned by president Theodore Roosevelt in 1907 to create coinage emulating that of the ancient Greeks.

Up to 300,000 of the coins - which were priced at $1,239 each as of January 29th - may be produced if their popularity remains high, the news source stated.

Earlier this week the Royal Mint announced it is to produce a limited edition gold coin to mark the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth.
