Aflease Gold has revealed that it has hoisted the first ore at its recommissioned Sub-Nigel mine in South Africa.

The ore was hoisted at the property on the Witwatersrand as scheduled and the company plans to stockpile it at the nearby Modder East operation near Johannesburg to be processed from May this year.

Aflease Gold is developing a new mine at Modder East and is hoping to achieve first production at the plant in the last quarter of 2009.

Neil Froneman, Aflease Gold chief executive, stated: "The focus of the Sub-Nigel team is now on safely achieving the planned production profile and establishing an underground training centre."

According to Mr Froneman, the firm will be able to build up ore stocks, run in the new plant and train workers ahead of the start of operations at Modder East.

Formed by the reverse takeover of Sub Nigel in January 2006 by New Kleinfontein, South African gold mining and exploration business Aflease Gold is listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange and traded in the US.
