Gold carpets are among the highlights of a new exhibition about an Iranian Shah being held at the British Museum.

The luxury gold-ground carpets are among the items contained in the display on Shah 'Abbas, who was the Shah of Iran between 1587 and 1629.

The museum stated that during this period 'Abbas encouraged good relations with the European powers and was famous for commissioning many great works of art and architecture.

Arranged in conjunction with the Iran Heritage Foundation, the exhibition includes items never before seen in Britain.

Visitors to the museum will be able to see the gold carpets from today (February 19th) until June 14th.

Another display featuring gold artefacts opened at the Wallace Collection this week.

Until May 10th visitors will be able to see medieval gold jewellery in the Treasures of the Black Death exhibition, which includes three Jewish wedding rings and a number of gold coins found in France and Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries.
