Gold coins and jewellery will form part of an exhibition of Anglo-Saxon artefacts that will visit Ipswich from next month.

The items, which date back centuries, will be placed on show at the Town Hall Galleries in the Suffolk town and come from the De Wit collection, purchased recently by The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, according to the Ipswich Evening Star.

Curated by Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service, the exhibition features a number of rare gold coins that are more than 1,200 years old and depict images of people, birds, animals, religious symbols and runes.

Mark Blackburn, keeper of coins and medals at the Fitzwilliam Museum, commented: "I am delighted that this collaboration between our museums will enable the people of Ipswich to see these extraordinary coins with their vibrant imagery."

Gold jewellery on show will include the gold Boss Hall Brooch from Sproughton and the Kennard Brooch, both of which were made more than 1,300 years ago.

Meanwhile, items including gold coins and ingots from a pirate shipwreck have been put on display as part of a new exhibition at the Field Museum in Chicago focused on the Whydah, which was wrecked in a storm off Cape Cod in 1717.
