A new drilling programme has commenced at Bjorkdal Gold Mine in Sweden, owners Gold Ore Resources has announced.

The project is intended to extend the life of the mine by expanding the availability of gold resources at the site.

Gold Ore is funding the development through receipts earned from past gold sales.

The firm's president Bob Wasylyshyn commented that Gold Ore's ability to finance the project via this method put it in an "enviable position".

He added: "We are confident that during 2009, we will be able to expand our resource base at Bjorkdal adding to the mine life."

Drilling will initially be concentrated on the central tunnel area of the mine, where high-grade gold has previously been found, with the company's own geologists then analysing the samples.

Last month the company announced plans to expand output at Bjorkdal by 20 per cent from its current annual production level of 40,000 ounces.
