A US scientist has received the highest honour from the American Chemical Society for his contribution to the area of medicine.

Frederick Hawthorne, who is the director of the University of Missouri's International Institute of Nano and Molecular Medicine, was given a gold medallion as part of the 2009 Priestley Medal, the Columbia Daily Tribune reports.

Mr Hawthorne was presented with the precious metal item as recognition of his work in the areas of medical imaging, drug delivery, nanotechnology and neutron-based radiation.

"I am very lucky to have been at the right place at the right time to begin work on clarifying the chemistry of boron, one of the most versatile elements," he told the news source, adding that he was "tickled to death" to receive the award.

Head of oncology at the Stanford University School of Medicine Dr Ronald Levy has also received a gold medallion as part of the 2009 King Faisal International Prize in Medicine, which he was awarded for his research into cancer treatment.
