Production of gold has begun at the Palmarejo mine in northern Mexico, it has been confirmed.

Coeur d'Alene Mines announced that work got underway on schedule, following 1.2 million man hours of construction.

The company expects the mine to produce 72,000 ounces of gold in 2009, with an 11-year plan for production to average at 120,000 ounces annually.

Chairman and president of Coeur Dennis Wheeler said that he is "extremely pleased" with the project to date, adding: "We are proud of the work accomplished by our Palmarejo team, including the local workforce, who completed construction on schedule and on budget."

The mine was recently awarded the Socially Responsible Business Disctintion for 2008 by the Centro Mexicano para la Filantropia.

Earlier this month, Coeur announced personnel changes, with Kelli Kast being promoted to the position of senior vice president, also taking on the role of chief administrative officer.
