Tuesday, 31st March 2009 (580 views) The 2009 Azalea Festival Coin Show is to focus on the history of gold mining in the US state of North Carolina, it has been announced.Taking place in Wilmington on April 4th-5th, the event will feature a travelling exhibit from the American Numismatic Association detailing the role gold played in the country's civil war, Star News Online reports. In addition, visitors will have the chance to pan for the precious metal during a demonstration from the Reed Gold Mine Historic Site volunteer group, which is the underground gold mine currently open to the public in the US. Around 45 coin dealers will also be attending the show, in order to display their collections of pieces made from the precious metal. Elsewhere in the US, a congressman from Pennsylvania has announced a plan for the US Mint to produce a commemorative coin honouring troops that have served in the army, navy and air force, Start and Stripes reports.
