Two leading university athletes in Canada have been awarded gold rings after being named female and male Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) athletes of 2009.

Swimmer Annamay Pierse of the University of British Columbia and Joel Schmuland, who plays for the University of Alberta Golden Bears volleyball team, collected their prizes at the Borden Ladner Gervais awards gala in Toronto this week, according to Canwest News Service.

The two sports stars were rewarded for their acheivements by CIS with a commemorative gold ring each, a trophy and a postgraduate scholarship.

Ms Pierse is a world record holder for the 200m breaststroke and Mr Schmuland is hoping to secure a position with a pro volleyball club in Europe.

In related news, the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a range of new items earlier this month, including the Red Maple, which weighs 1.25th of an ounce and is the mint's smallest-ever gold coin.
