Thursday, 30th April 2009 (687 views) Lihir Gold has revealed that its gold production more than doubled during the first quarter of 2009, compared with the same period of last year.The firm, which has reported record output for three consecutive quarters, produced 318,000 ounces of gold at its four properties during the three months to January 2009. Lihir Gold's flagship Lihir Island Papua New Guinea property produced 247,000 ounces of gold during the three-month period, while the Bonikro mine in Cote d'Ivoire generated 40,100 ounces. The Mt Rawdon prospect in Queensland, Australia delivered 25,500 ounces and Ballarat in Victoria produced 5,700 ounces of gold. Arthur Hood, Lihir Gold managing director, stated: "We have now firmly established the company as a diversified global gold producer with a portfolio of high quality, low-cost assets and exciting growth potential." Lihir Gold is a global gold producer with one of the world's largest gold mines and processing facilities on Lihir Island in the New Ireland province of Papua New Guinea.
