Wednesday, 20th May 2009 (1340 views) A gold collector's coin is being produced by Gdansk to mark the 20th anniversary of landmark elections.The Polish city is creating a version of the thaler - a coin used for four centuries in Europe - this June in order to commemorate the victory of the Solidarity party, which heralded the end of communism, according to the Polish Radio External Service. Designed by Robert Kotowicz, the obverse of the gold thaler depicts the Gdasnk coat of arms and St Mary's Church. The reverse of the coin, which has been designed by Dobrochna Surajewska, features former president Lech Walesa, the Solidarity flag and an inscription that translates as 'It all began in Gdansk'. Proceeds from sales of the commemorative coins will be donated to the European Solidarity Centre in Poland. Elsewhere in Europe, King Albert of Belgium has approved a new gold coin produced to mark his and Queen Paola's golden wedding anniversary during a visit to the country's Royal Mint, Expatica reports.
