The Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum in Queensland has been linked to Google Maps for International Museum Day 2009.

Joining cultural institutions around the world, the museum has marked the event by highlighting its exhibitions online, the Gympie Times reports.

Features of the museum include the relocated and restored home of former prime minister Andrew Fisher, who was originally from Glasgow and was involved in the gold mining industry from the age of ten, having emigrated to Queensland in 1885.

Museum and Gallery Services Queensland has organised Museums Alight! to showcase collections across the state, including the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum, which has been holding guiding tours for visitors.

Alluvial gold was discovered in October 1867 in gullies in a location initially called Nashville. The name was later changed to Gympie and mining continues in the area today.

The Eldorado property in Gympie is the eighth largest gold producing mine in Australia and the local museum houses memorabilia linked to more than 100 years of mining activity in the region with over 30 displays.
