A new nanotechnology deal has been reached between IBM and the Bulgarian government.

The computer technology company has signed a general framework agreement that will see it work alongside Bulgarian authorities in order to develop the use of nanoscience in the country.

Universities, industry and the Bulgarian Academy of Science will be taking part in the three-year programme in order to conduct further research into nanoproducts, micromachines and microsystems, the development of which often involves gold use.

The Bulgarian Nanotechnology Centre is to be built as part of the deal and will utilise IBM's Blue Gene supercomputer, which is owned by the Bulgarian State Agency for Information Technology and Communications.

Due to open next year, the facility will become a home for research into the areas of nanomaterials and nanosystems for use in electronics.

Last week, it was announced that Irish researchers are to partner with scientists based at the Nanobiotechnology Centre at New York's Cornell University to take part in a two-day nanotechnology workshop early next month.
