Residents and tourists are being invited to try their hand at gold prospecting in Arizona this weekend.

Estrella Mountain Regional Park is hosting an event dubbed the 'Eureka! Gold Find Program' on Saturday May 30th, the Arizona Republic reports.

Among the activities on offer will be the use of a dry washer, which can filter gold out of the soil.

Guests will also be provided with demonstrations of metal detectors, while a pair of prospecting enthusiasts will be available to help those who want to pan for gold.

Ranger at the park Patricia Armstrong explained that the area, as well as the state as a whole, is a "fantastic place" to search for the precious metal.

"Arizona is the fourth-largest gold-producing state in America and geologists say that 65 per cent of the state's gold is still in the ground," she was quoted as saying.

Terry Solomon of Arizona Gold Adventures recently told the Arizona Daily Star that tourists from around the world are showing an increasing level of interest in prospecting.
