Wednesday, 24th June 2009 (1293 views) Demand for American Eagle gold bullion coins has been described as "unprecedented" by the United States Mint. The organisation, which is required to create the money in "quantities sufficient to meet public demand" under Public Law 99-185, has been forced to temporarily suspend production as a result. All 22-c gold blanks that are available are now being allocated to the America Eagle gold bullion coin programme. Once enough are collected to match the market demand for the coins, production will resume. The United States Mint added: "As a result of the recent numismatic product portfolio analysis, fractional sizes of American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins will no longer be produced." Earlier this month, Gregory Zuckerman of the Wall Street Journal observed that there has been a huge growth of interest in gold coins, with investors attracted to them because they are viewed as being a safe haven during times of economic uncertainty.
