Nevada is preparing to celebrate its 160th anniversary of the discovery of gold in the area.

According to an article on the Reno Gazette-Journal website, the event is going to be hosted by the Historical Society of Dayton Valley on July 11th.

Locals and visitors can go along to the Dayton Museum between the hours of 14:00 and 16:00 local time to enjoy ice cream, western music and children's games.

A decade ago, for the 150th anniversary, the celebration was much bigger. The two-day event saw a parade of 300 entries, a Civil War re-enactment and the erection of the Nevada State historical monument.

During the Civil War re-enactment, spectators were greeted with pioneer canvas tents, gold panning and traditional stagecoaches pulled by horses.

In addition, a medallion was minted with the CC mint mark to commemorate the occasion.

Frontiersman Abner Blackburn was said to be the first person to find gold in the state in 1849. His discovery led to the gold rush in Nevada.

Members of the US Marshal Service may also find themselves honoured in the near future with the minting of gold coins if proposals are accepted by the US government.
