Friday, 24th July 2009 (876 views) This weekend will see the opening of a Buckingham Palace exhibition focusing on the Queen's official visits around the Commonwealth - with a number of gold items set to be made available for viewing. The Queen & Commonwealth exhibition will display the monarch's various outfits and jewellery that she has worn on past visits, as well as gifts presented to her by countries and organisations on these trips. Among these are an intricately decorated gold box presented by the sultan of Brunei in 1972 and a gold and wood model of the Sikh Golden Temple of Amritsar in Punjab given by the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak committee in 1992. Visitors will also be able to view a gold model of an orchid presented by the people and government of Singapore in 2002 and a gold brooch shaped like a Kotoko porcupine, given by the king of the Ashanti in 1972. "It's nice for us to bring the items together and try to at least evoke a sense of the tours she has undertaken," exhibition curator Caroline De Guitaut told the Australian Associated Press. The Queen & Commonwealth exhibition opens on July 26th at Buckingham Palace and runs until September 30th.
