Friday, 24th July 2009 (3960 views) The Royal Mint has announced the launch of the new 2009 Britannia collection of gold coins.Struck to 22-c gold proof quality, the coins feature Philip Nathan's depiction of Britannia in her chariot on the reverse and the present portrait of the Queen on the front. The coins are available in a four-coin set comprising £100, £50, £25 and £10 gold proof coins, with only 1,250 such sets available. Collectors can also purchase the £25 and £10 coins individually. Dave Knight, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, commented: "Bringing together Philip Nathan's powerful design with the current portrait of the Queen for the first time on the gold Britannia family makes these coins especially desirable." The 2009 range is the eighth version of the Britannia commemorative coins to be launched since 1987. Britannia was the name used by the Romans to refer to the province of their empire located in the current British Isles. They then began to use the name to reference a goddess who later became one of Britain's national symbols.
