Monday, 27th July 2009 (1070 views) The shortlist for this year's AuDITIONS gold jewellery design festival has been announced, with designers from across South Africa in the running for the coveted prize.Hundreds of designers submitted pieces for the competition, which is being run under the theme of Urban Tribes, with designs required to fit into a number of categories, including Pampered Princess, Hip Hop Homeboy and Old Money Honey. Now, organisers of the prize have announced a shortlist of 11 designers, who have all been praised for their innovation in coming up with original gold jewellery pieces complying with the competition's themes. Among the finalists, Soweto-based designer Lincoln Mokena explained that he got his inspiration for his two pieces from the hip hop culture of his township's streets. "I chose the mag-wheel element from their lifestyle because Hip Hop Homeboys love their fast cars," he told the Sowetan. "My ring which is made from 18 carat white and yellow gold is still in the manufacturing process. It spins just like a mag-wheel." The competition, which comes with a cash prize for the top three designs, is being judged by a number of design specialists and the winners will be announced in October.
