Residents of one US town are planning a return to the days of gold-panning in a day of historical recreations.

Forbestown locals dressed in period costume of the Gold Rush era will act out scenes in locations including an old-fashioned millinery, barber's shop and sheriff's office on August 1st.

Visitors can enjoy a tour of a newspaper printing press and pan for gold as part of the Forbestown Daze celebrations.

Candidates will be running for the role of honorary sheriff and for $1, visitors can vote for their favourite.

The person who collects the most donations will hold the title until next year's election.

Events are expected to run from 09:00 to 16:00 local time at the Yuba Feather Museum and Gold Trader Flat in the Yuba County foothills.

According to the area's local paper the Appeal-Democrat, the museum has more than 10,000 artefacts and 3,500 photographs which help recreate the atmosphere of the Gold Rush era.
