Gold panning 'part of Wild West experience'The news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Monday, 27th July 2009 (3022 views) Gold panning is part of the Old West-style experience on offer for guests of all ages at an Arizona ranch.Writing for the New Zealand Herald, Karyn Scherer said there were plenty of activities on the site to keep her family members - including a four-year-old and a six-year-old - entertained. The setting, she wrote, "looks as if it has been specifically created for a Western movie", as the Grand Canyon West Ranch is situated in the shadow of Spirit Mountain. In addition to panning for gold, the "unique tourist experience" offers horseback riding at sunset and a re-enactment of a Wild West gunfight. According to NuggetShooter.com, legend has it that a prospector by the name of Long Tom Watson discovered a lost placer deposit and a cache of gold nuggets on Old Tanner Trail, in the south rim of the Grand Canyon near Desert View Point. However, he broke his leg while leaving the canyon and was never again able to find the waterfall where the nuggets were hidden. Visitors to the canyon who want to try their luck at finding the gold cache should enter the park through its east entrance, which is north of Flagstaff.
