People who collect coins may find the pastime "quite lucrative", the Daily Gazette has suggested.

It noted that people choose to collect coins for a number of reasons, including a fascination with ancient history, keeping a family tradition alive or the appeal of making money from a valuable discovery.

Frank S Robinson, a retired New York state administrative law judge and the current secretary of the Albany Numismatic Society, told the publication that for many people, coin collecting is about the "sheer sport of the game".

He said: "You're just going out there and looking for stuff, trying to find good stuff at a right price."

But for others, such as Wendell Williams of the Ferris Stamp and Coin Company, coin collection is less about the price of gold and more about achieving a comprehensive holding.

"Collecting should be about collecting for the enjoyment of achieving a complete set, not what the gold is worth," he explained.

Numismatic enthusiasts - those who study or collect currency - can find coins of all kinds at the American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money in Los Angeles next month.

A number of world mints are set to display at the event, including Canada, Australia and Japan.
