Tuesday, 28th July 2009 (567 views) A shopkeeper on Australia's Gold Coast was surprised when he uncovered two ounces of pure gold in a public telephone box.Gold Coast News reported that Stewart McNaughton decided to tidy up the phone booth, which he thought was littered with tissues. But when he picked up the rubbish, he discovered the tissues were concealing two lumps of pure gold worth thousands of dollars. "As I picked it up I realised it was really heavy so I opened it up and saw it was gold," he told the newspaper. Mr McNaughton handed the gold to police, where it was reclaimed by its rightful owner, Victor Robertson, who accidentally left it behind as he was travelling to the airport for a holiday abroad. He had planned to use the precious metal for spending money during his travels in Malaysia and the UK, but dropped it in the phone booth when he stopped for some fast food before his flight. A representative from the New Zealand Mint noted last week that gold has seen strong investment demand as people prepare for a possible period of inflation. During times of economic recovery, gold is viewed by some investors as a "solid hedge", Mike O'Kane stated.
