A California-based jewellery store owner has helped to recover a number of gold items - including a custom-made necklace and bracelet - after they were stolen from a locked drawer during an open house in Cheviot Hills.

The LA Times reported that although homeowner Tamara Kroner knew the chance of getting back her treasures was unlikely, she followed the advice of a police detective who told her to send a letter featuring photos of the stolen gold items to hundreds of jewellers and pawnshops in the area.

Her necklace and bracelet, which she had worn during her 1993 wedding and hoped to save as future family heirlooms, were spotted days later by a sharp-eyed jewellery store owner, Michael Kurt of Jewels by Kurt.

Mr Kurt alerted police when a pair of women brought the items into his store hoping to sell them. Arrests were made and the jewellery was recovered.

"It is truly a story that in my wildest dreams I did not think would have a just ending," Ms Kroner told the newspaper.

Gold jewellery was recently described as "the ultimate investment" by a New York Fashion Week designer.

Carmen Marc Valvo told the Providence Jewelry Examiner that items crafted with the precious metal have an "eternal allure".
