Wednesday, 29th July 2009 (583 views) A gala fundraising event themed around the California Gold Rush has generated around $48,000 (£29,339) for a family support centre. The Gold Rush Gala included a silent auction, dinner from a Wild West chuck wagon and an "eye-catching" replica of an 1856 stagecoach, the Montgomery Advertiser reports. All proceeds from the event, which was attended by over 250 people, will go towards the Montgomery Family Guidance Center, a non-profit organisation that provides child care support, parenting guidance, adult day care and job training services. The newspaper said the fundraising event is a prelude to the centre's 50th anniversary celebrations, which will take place in October. Gold Rush Gala co-chairs Scott Harris and Donna Stricklin said the event had attracted its "best turnout ever". The California Gold Rush was sparked in 1849 after James Marshall, a worker at a sawmill belonging to Swiss pioneer John Sutter, discovered the precious metal in the American River near Coloma.
