A significant haul of gold artefacts has been discovered in a sunken pirate ship located off the coast of Borneo.

The ship, named Forbes, was found to hold €7 million (£6 million) worth of gold jewellery and other artefacts.

Germans Martin Wenzel and Klaus Keppler found the treasure trove after investing €3 million over the last two years in a search for the goods, according to a Bild report cited by the Local.

Cannons, crystal items and Ming porcelain were also discovered in the shipwreck.

Mr Wenzel and Mr Keppler are already looking to their next project, a search for a shipwreck off the coast of East Timor that may hold up to two tonnes of gold.

"When you hold the treasure in your hands, it's an indescribable rush of adrenaline. You're witness to times past," Mr Wenzel commented.

The Forbes sailed under a permit from the British king and sank in September 1906 while it was on its way to India, according to the Deutsche Presse-Argentur.
