Wednesday, 29th July 2009 (1068 views) A unique gold ring has been discovered during an excavation in northern Bulgaria.The 23-c solid gold ring was discovered by archaeologists digging at the site of the St Ivan Rilski church in Veliko Tarnovo, according to a Darik radio report cited by Novinite. Featuring an antique gem displaying an image of the Roman god Jupiter, the 25g ring has been identified as an example of fine gold craftsmanship. The site of the discovery has yielded four other gold items in the last week, including a gold ring that was found in the grave of a 14th century princess, as well as a pair of gold earrings. According to experts, the St Ivan Rilski church formed part of a monastery complex believed to have been built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Veliko Tarnovo is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria, with evidence of life in the area dating back to the third century BC.
