Bill proposes Ronald Reagan gold coinsThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Thursday, 30th July 2009 (1367 views) Up to 50,000 $5 gold coins could be struck by the US Mint to commemorate former president Ronald Reagan under a new bill currently before Congress. The Ronald Reagan Commemorative Coin Act of 2009, also known as HR 3341, was introduced by Ohio Republican Robert Latta. It would authorise precious metal coins to be struck bearing a likeness of the late president on one side, with a design "similar to the depiction of an American eagle carrying an olive branch, flying above a nest containing another eagle and hatchlings" on the reverse. Coin News said the detail of the directions for the design is unusual for commemorative coin legislation. A $35 (£21.20) surcharge would be added to the price of the gold coins, with the proceeds going to the Army Emergency Fund. The fund provides financial support to active army, National Guard or army reserve soldiers and their dependants, troops who have retired due to long service or physical disability and the partners of soldiers who died either on active duty or following retirement.
