Friday, 31st July 2009 (1100 views) One of the largest collections of gold coins to be put up for sale in Wiltshire is to be offered at auction next month.The collection of coins and tokens, which used to be owned by Richard Nutland of Poulshot, includes a rare Charles II gold five guinea piece dating from 1697 that is expected to see a sale price of about £1,000 alone. Taking place on August 15th, the auction is being run by Aldridge & Son in Devizes, the North Wiltshire and Kennet Gazette & Herald reports. A number of 17th century tokens from businesses located in Devizes, Bradford on Avon, Marlborough, Chippenham and Malmesbury are also included in the collection. In 2000, schoolboy John Philpotts discovered a pot filled with Roman gold coins worth tens of thousands of pounds in a farmer's field in Wiltshire. The treasure trove included three solidi, which are pure gold coins that held a high value during the time of the Roman Empire.
