Local community raising funds to keep gold museum openThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Friday, 31st July 2009 (569 views) A small US community is working to raise money to keep its gold museum open seven days a week. The Dahlonega Gold Museum in Georgia currently closes on Mondays and Tuesdays due to a lack of funding from the state, the Gainsville Times reports. Now local residents have come up with a number of ways to raise money to keep the establishment open all week, including a contest to win prizes by guessing how many people will visit the Southern Living Idea House, a local attraction. A chapter of the Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites will also be opened by the people of Dahlonega. "We've had a lot of visitors that have come [to the museum] that have been disappointed. It's just very crucial for our summer and it's also the focal point of our town," commented Amy Booker, interim president of the Dahlonega Chamber of Commerce. Dahlonega claims to be the site of the first gold rush in the US two decades before the bigger California Gold Rush in 1849. The museum's exhibits from this time include gold coins, large nuggets and antique mining equipment.
