Friday, 21st August 2009 (3774 views) A major exploration of shipwrecks in the waters around the Island of Mozambique has yielded a haul of gold coins.Underwater exploration company Patrimonio Internacional found 14 gold coins and 443.6g of gold, as well as a number of other coins, during the project, which began in 1999. According to the Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique news agency, the gold coins are believed to be worth 35,570 (£30,752), while the rest of the gold is valued at 14,259 at current market prices. The exploration project was undertaken in partnership with the Mozambican government and the finds will be delivered to institutions such as the Museum of Geology and Money Museum in due course. They will eventually be displayed at the Marine Museum of the Island of Mozambique, which is due to open soon. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Island of Mozambique is home to the fortified city of Mozambique and used to be a Portuguese trading post on the route to India.
