Thursday, 24th September 2009 (3394 views) A rare gold wristwatch made by Swiss luxury brand Ulysse Nardin has sold at auction for $45,750 (£28,195), smashing the original estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.The 18-c gold automatic hour repeating watch from the Clavius Collection was the marquee lot of Bonhams & Butterfields's autumn Salon Jewelry sale in Las Vegas, Nevada earlier this week. It features a 22-c gold engraved rotor and a lapis lazuli dial with applied gold Arabic numerals, as well as jewelled decorations. Other gold watches by Glashutte and Ulysse Nardin also fetched high prices at the auction. "During the well-received auction, robust interest was seen for several pieces from the Clavius Collection of fine wristwatches [and] gold items," commented Michael Larsen, a jewellery specialist at Bonhams & Butterfields. Elsewhere, the auction house is holding a sale of rare gold jewellery, watches and antiques at an event in Oxford in the UK today (September 24th).
