Tuesday, 27th October 2009 (2939 views) A gold medal representing the first ever major honour to be presented to famous Celtic football player and manager Jock Stein is to be auctioned next month. The gold 1953-54 Scottish Cup medal will be sold by Convery Auctions at its London sale of sporting memorabilia on November 16th. It is expected to sell for between £3,500 and £5,500. It was awarded to Stein after Celtic defeated Aberdeen 2-0 at Hampden Park during a season that also saw the Glasgow side win the Scottish League Championship. He retired as a player in 1957 and returned to Celtic as manager in 1965. The club went on to win the first ever domestic treble and nine league championship titles in a row. Celtic also became the first British and northern European club to win the European Cup in 1967 under Stein's leadership. He died in 1985. Auction director David Convery said: "A normal Scottish Cup medal will usually go for between £1,000 and £1,500, but considering who this one belonged to we believe it will make quite a bit more." Various gold medals, watches and other items belonging to a range of players and clubs will also be auctioned next month.
