The latest Pen of the Year from German firm Faber-Castell comes with a gold nib and the unusual embellishment of pleated horsehair.

Faber-Castell produces a new pen every year that features a rare material and has previously used Indian satin wood and amber in its creations.

The 2009 Pen of the Year costs $3,500 (£2,143) and includes an 18-c gold nib available in various widths.

Buyers can even request a custom pen made with tail hairs from their own horses.

Faber-Castell says that the art of horsehair pleating is a difficult one to master, as 70 hairs have to be individually woven for each centimetre of fabric.

All of the company's Pens of the Year are becoming harder to find as they are snapped up by collectors, Faber-Castell chief executive Count Anton-Wolfgang von Faber-Castell tells Reuters.

"It is becoming more and more difficult to put together a collection of all of the Pens of the Year," he remarks.

Many of the world's most expensive luxury pens feature solid gold nibs.
