More than 20,000 gold jewellery pieces, ornaments and vessels dating back to the first century BC were found at the site of Tillya Tepe by Soviet archaeologists in the late 1970s. Items from the hoard were recently displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and are currently on show at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Quebec until March 28th. The artefacts were rediscovered in 2003 after it was believed that they had been permanently lost as a result of civil war and the rule of the Taliban.
