Objects from a haul of Anglo-Saxon gold treasure discovered in Staffordshire earlier this year are to go on display at the British Museum in London from this week.

The temporary exhibition follows the showcasing of some of the items from the hoard - which numbered more than 1,500 pieces in total - at the Birmingham Museum. The display attracted over 40,000 people overall.

Visitors to the British Museum will be able to see the artefacts from tomorrow (November 3rd) until the new year, at which point they will be transferred to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent.

British Museum spokeswoman Hannah Boulton told the Daily Express: "We are delighted to have this find here and to be able to put it on display to give people in London the chance to see it ... We are sure there will be huge interest."

She added that the museum is supporting a bid by several councils to keep the gold treasure in the West Midlands.

Ross Irving, leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, told the Sentinel that the exhibition of the treasure in the city will be likely to attract thousands of new visitors to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.
