Tuesday, 3rd November 2009 (530 views) The finest known edition of the 1907 Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin is to go on display in the US next month.Insured for $5 million (£3.06 million), the rare numismatic piece will be showcased during the first three days of the Santa Clara, California Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo, which takes place between November 19th and 22nd and will see hundreds of exhibitors and collectors buy and sell a variety of coins. There are currently fewer than 20 known examples of the coin in existence, with this particular specimen regarded as the finest. Ronald Gillio, general chairman of the expo, said: "This famous coin was designed by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the personal request of president Theodore Roosevelt. "It was struck seven times to bring up all the beautiful features in the design." Made by the US Mint, the 2009 edition of the Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is crafted from 24-c gold and features an updated version of the original 1907 design.
