An exhibition featuring gold treasure found on a sunken pirate ship off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts is to open in Virginia later this month.

The Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship display - which has been organised by National Geographic and Arts and Exhibitions International - includes several chests of gold coins and jewellery found on the Whydah, which sank almost three centuries ago.

It will open on November 21st at Nauticus in Norfolk, Virginia and run until April 4th 2010.

The Whydah was carrying plunder from over 50 other ships when she sank in 1717, including African Akan jewellery and Spanish gold coins.

Last seen at the Field Museum in Chicago, the exhibition has been put together by the team that organised the Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs travelling display, which includes gold artefacts relating to the kings of ancient Egypt.
