Monday, 16th November 2009 (3468 views) A rare gold Double Eagle featuring the famous Saint-Gaudens design is to be sold at an auction in the US next month. The 1925 coin will be offered for sale by Heritage Auction Galleries at its Signature US Coin Auction in Houston, Texas on December 3rd. It is estimated to sell for at least $70,000 (£41,928) and is a rare D-mint issue that almost disappeared in the 1930s. "Any 1925-D Double Eagle is a desirable coin and a gem survivor such as this is of particular importance," commented Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auction Galleries. Coins in the gem numismatic category are classified as being particularly well made. Other gold coins to be sold at the auction include two 1915 Panama-Pacific $50 pieces, one of which is round and the other octagonal. The round coin is estimated to sell for at least $80,000, while the octagonal version is expected to fetch a minimum of $70,000. Heritage Auction Galleries sold a rare 1879 Flowing Hair gold Stella for $161,000 at its Dallas Signature US Coin sale last month.
