Thursday, 19th November 2009 (2810 views) A rare gold Tiffany & Co medal found by a Liverpool jeweller in its scrap pile is to go on auction later this month. The 20-c gold Life Saving Medal was designed by CH Lovett and awarded to Alfred N Bevan by the Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York in 1911 after he saved three men from a sinking ship near St Michael's in the Azores. It was found by jewellery firm W J Edwards, which was prompted to find out more about the piece by an inscription on the reverse. The medal will be auctioned by Fellows & Sons on November 30th and is estimated to sell for between £2,000 and £3,000. Margot Walker and Peter Edwards of W J Edwards said: "This medal simply stood out as it was in impeccable condition when we found it." Stephen Whittaker of Fellows & Sons added: "This Life Saving Medal is unique and carries an interesting history." Other rare gold items that will be offered for sale by the auctioneer include two Russian 1943 Order of the Glory medals and a 19th century prize medal for achievements in Arabic from Haileybury East India College.
