Tuesday, 16th March 2010 (1698 views) The Monnaie de Paris, the French mint, has announced plans to produce two new one-kilogram gold coins, as well as a pair of ten-ounce gold designs, for its 2010 collectors' range. One of the one-kilogram specimens is part of a series celebrating world landmarks. Following on from previous designs covering the Great Wall of China, the Grand Canyon and the Kremlin, the new 5,000 coin will feature the Taj Mahal. The depiction of the building's famous dome will be set with diamonds and only 29 of the coins will be struck. Pablo Picasso will be commemorated on the second one-kilogram coin, with a portrait and signature of the great master on one side, with an engraving of his 1948 poster Vallauris, fauna on the other. This rectangular piece will have a 5,000 face value and will also be limited to 29 pieces. The first ten-ounce coin is being struck to mark the 1,100th anniversary of Cluny Abbey in Burgundy. A second ten-ounce design will celebrate the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, which was inaugurated in 1977. The project's original architects, Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano, have designed the 1,000 euro coin and only 39 of the pieces will be made.
